  • Why Is It Called Cholula?

To honor our heritage, Cholula Hot Sauce was named after a city in Mexico that is 2,500 years old - making it the oldest inhabited city in North America. Cholula has been made in Mexico since its inception. Our complex flavor comes from a family recipe that has been handed down through many generations, blending native arbol and pequin peppers with an array of regional spices. From our distinctive wooden cap to the delicious sauce inside, every bottle of Cholula is a celebration of great food, robust flavor, and our Mexican roots. Today, Cholula is a fixture in many homes and restaurants. We are proud to bring a little bit of Mexican tradition and craftmanship to your meals.

  • How Do You Pronounce Cholula?
We’ve heard several interesting takes but it’s Choe-loo-la.
  • How Spicy Is Cholula Hot Sauce?

In 1912, Wilbur Scoville developed a scale to measure peppery punch. Cholula Original delivers an enjoyable 1000 - 2000 Scoville units. For comparison, bell peppers range between 0-100 while habaneros fall between 200,000-300,000.

  • Is Cholula Hot Sauce Gluten-Free?

Gluten and gluten products, when present, will always be declared on the product label by the common name of the gluten source such as “barley”, “wheat”, “rye”, “oats” or “triticale”. It is important that you read the ingredient statement on your package at the time of purchase to ensure accurate, up to date information.

  • Does Cholula Hot Sauce Need to Be Refrigerated?

Clear space in your cabinet because Cholula Hot Sauce does not need to be kept cool. Cholula Hot Sauce is best used within the first six months after opening.

  • How Long Is Product Good For?

To enjoy the best flavor, we recommend that Cholula be consumed within six months of opening, and within its shelf life.

Cholula sauce can be consumed past 6 months of opening as long as still within its Best By date. However, the product is more exposed to oxygen which accelerates the degradation of color and flavor. There is no health risk, but the flavor will not be the same.

We don’t recommend consuming Cholula past its Best By date.

  • How Do I Find the Best by Date?

Since mid-2018, our products have been stamped with Best By dates and a lot code number beneath. Prior to mid-2018, a Julian date code was used. If your bottle does not have an explicit Best By date, we do not recommend consuming. There is no health risk, but the flavor will not be the same.
